Forensic Investigation

Forensic engineering investigation analyzes building failures, damage, or performance issues to determine their root cause. By combining field inspection, engineering analysis, and documentation review, our professionals identify what happened, why it happened, and provide clear recommendations to support repair decisions, insurance claims, or legal proceedings.

Laboratory Testing

Laboratory testing is a critical bridge between design assumptions and real-world performance. For owners, developers, insurers, and attorneys, it serves as a powerful risk-management tool, one that reveals material defects, chemical incompatibilities, and environmental vulnerabilities long before they escalate into costly failures. Basecamp’s laboratory services provide the scientific certainty needed to assess building envelopes, structural components, and specialty materials with confidence. Through objective, data-driven evaluation, we support clients navigating complex litigation, diagnosing field failures, or validating the performance of new assemblies. Our forensic approach transforms laboratory observations into actionable engineering insight, helping safeguard investments and ensure long-term durability.

Based in our specialized facility in Golden, Colorado, Basecamp integrates advanced material science with practical engineering expertise. Our laboratory simulates real-world stressors, from freeze-thaw cycling to moisture, vapor, and thermal loading, to evaluate how materials behave under demanding conditions. Beyond testing, our multi-disciplinary experts interpret results through the lens of structural engineering, architecture, and forensic investigation. Supported by a network of Tier-1 subconsultant laboratories, we offer both specialized and traditional testing, including techniques such as FTIR and Isothermal Calorimetry. Basecamp’s engineers can testify to all laboratory findings, providing seamless support from data collection to expert opinion. This holistic, evidence-based approach allows us to pinpoint failure mechanisms and define performance thresholds with exceptional clarity.

Standard of Care

Basecamp’s architects and engineers bring deep experience in both new design and repair design across civil, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, and architectural disciplines. Our professionals have served as the design professional of record on a wide range of projects and are fluent in multiple delivery methods, including design-build. Their background also includes construction administration, owner’s representation, and development of construction cost estimates. Because of their extensive training and technical expertise, our consulting staff have been called upon to testify on matters involving the design professional’s Standard of Care.

Understanding the Standard of Care requires evaluating industry practice, including guidelines from organizations such as AIA and ASCE, along with state practice acts. The Standard of Care does not demand perfection; rather, it reflects what a reasonably careful design professional would do under similar circumstances at that time and place. Basecamp’s experts regularly analyze design work for common errors and omissions and understand that their presence does not automatically indicate negligence or a deviation from accepted practice.
